Finding Joy In My Space

Lately, I’ve been finding so much joy in decorating my space.

Not just cleaning it. Not just making it look “nice” for the camera. But actually turning it into a place that feels like me. When your space is where you film, create, work, and show up for people, I think it matters that you actually like being in it. It matters that it feels inspiring. It matters that when you look around, you see pieces of yourself reflected back at you.

What Others Think You Like

When you’re younger, your room is usually made up of things other people buy for you. Things they think you like, things that are practical, things that are available, or things that make sense at the time. And while those things can be loved and appreciated, they don’t always fully reflect your personal style. Your room becomes this mix of gifts, hand-me-downs, childhood phases, and other people’s ideas of who you are. If you have a spouse, it's kind of the same thing, usually one person is more loud about what they like in the space, and the other person gets more like their own den/or garage. But, It's really fun to ask yourself, “What do I actually like?” Not what fits, not what was given to me, not what I’ve always had, but what feels like me now. What have I always been drawn to, and how can I label it.

Developing My Style

For a long time, I don’t think my space fully represented me. It functioned, sure. It held the things I needed it to hold. But it didn’t always feel like it was telling my story. I think I’m finally starting to understand what I want that story to look like. I’ve always had this mix in me of playful and classic. I love things that feel a little quirky, a little unexpected, but still warm and beautiful. I love black and white. I love patterns. I love checkered details, stripes, soft textures, and little pieces that make you stop and smile. Recently, I’ve been falling in love with warmer tones too. Walnut woods, gold accents, creamy neutrals, and pieces that make a room feel a little more editorial, a little more grounded, and a little more intentional.

It’s funny because decorating can seem like such a surface-level thing from the outside. Like you’re just picking furniture or moving objects around. But for me, it has started to feel deeper than that. It feels like I’m learning how to take up space in my own space. I’m learning that my home doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It doesn’t have to follow one exact theme. It can be playful and elegant. Cozy and bold. Soft and a little dramatic. Classic, but still a little weird in the best way. That feels like me...let me know if you agree.

Interesting On Film

Because I film in my space, I want it to feel like an extension of me. I want people to get a sense of who I am before I even say anything. I want the room to have warmth, charm, personality, and a little wink of fun. When I do, get it all looking how I want, I think the way my thumbnails will look will make my library appear more cohesive, and interesting. The camera loves contrast so my black and white checkers and stripes are really eye catching, then the warm tones of wood will make it feel more inviting and soft, and then the quirky pieces will make the room memorable. All of those things are what I want to give off to my viewers; eye catching, inviting, and memorable.

Quirky And Me

I always love the idea of having unique pieces that start a conversation, or leave a long lasting impression. It's like going to that distant relative's house who has a random Coca-Cola brand, vintage fridge. Or the cool wooden giraffe statue at your Aunt Diane's house. Curating your own interesting repertoire of memorable items is so chic to me. One that I have is, a miniature brass hippo. It's a Canadian joke from an old television commercial, to have a house hippo, and it's a cute addition to the kitchen. I also have my classic haunted doll houses I renovate for my Halloween display, and my gingerbread village for my Christmas display. One I would really love to do is a vintage gumball machine, but I want to customize mine, paint it striped or checkered. Maybe put an interesting topper on it to make it more grand. Ouu, Also a vintage popcorn maker.

Seasonal Transition

Now I know my style is really bold, and sometimes that can really clash with seasonal decor. I didn't want to have to pull my rug up, so that it wasn't an eye sore at Christmas. But the thing about the checkered rug and stripes, is that they actually elevate my classic style for both major holidays. For Halloween, they compliment the bold black and oranges, and the stripes make it feel a little circus-like. For Christmas, they kind of give it a really editorial classic feel. I'm so excited to see it all come together.

How You Can Help Me With It

I have been so incredibly lucky over the years with my amazing fans who want to help me see my visions through. I think about my fans when I look at, enjoy and use the things they get me, even years after. I regularly update my Throne Wishlist, usually putting things I really want on the first page! You could surprise me, or ask me specifically which items I really want at that time!
